Newspaper earnings are up – but view with caution…

According to Poynter, newspaper business is looking up. Advertising revenue is not bleeding nearly as bad as it was. Thanks to severe cost-cutting measures, all the companies — even A. H. Belo Corp. — operated at a profit for the last quarter of 2009. After ad revenue declined an average of 28.5 percent for the first three quarters of 2009, companies reported fourth quarter ad losses in the mid-teens to low-20 percent range. Poynter lists a bunch of factors into how one should percieve all of this. In other words, if any industry spends Q1 – Q3 slashing all of their operating budgets, then Q4 will look naturally brighter.
