British Newspaper Sold for £1 to Former K.G.B. Agent

The Independent, a British newspaper, was sold for £1 ($1.48) on Thursday to Alexander Lebedev, a Russian billionaire who purchased the London Evening Standard last year for the same price. Mr. Lebedev, the world’s 488th-richest man, reportedly developed an interest in the British press when he was stationed in London as a K.G.B. agent in the 1980s and read the newspapers every day.
