Gothamist Aquisition is off…but don’t necessarily blame Jake Dobkin.

Gothamist.com was supposedly going to be aquired by Rainbow Media (a division of Cablevision), but that deal is now off according to Gawker and the Village Voice.

While we don’t agree with Dobkin’s assessment of the New York Times, nor do we think it’s a smart business practice to trash your own advertisers(?!), the man IS 100% free and open to speak his mind on Facebook/Twitter. What else is Social Media for, if one can’t express their own opinion.

With this being said, despite Dobkin’s rants, we have a hard time believing that a $5 Million aquisition would be killed based on some random online-trash talking. Due to the fact that Gothamist’s bottom line would remain mostly un-affected by Dobkin’s ranting, and the truth is it’s only bought the site more publicity. Money is the end-game to the bean-counters at the end of the day in business aquisitions of this size.
